Economy Overview

Vietnam has executed one of the most impressive economic pivots in modern Asian history. In a single generation, the country shifted from a rice-exporting agricultural economy to the world's second-largest exporter of smartphones — all while maintaining single-party political stability and macroeconomic discipline that rivals its much larger ASEAN peers. The China+1 manufacturing shift is Vietnam's structural tailwind: Samsung manufactures roughly half its global smartphone output in the country, Intel runs its largest global chip assembly plant in Ho Chi Minh City, and Apple has moved AirPod and iPad production lines into the northern provinces. GDP growth has averaged 6–7% for two decades, with the VND managed tightly by the State Bank of Vietnam to protect export competitiveness. The HOSE (Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange) and HNX together list over 1,800 companies, dominated by real estate developers, private banks, and industrial park operators — all direct beneficiaries of the FDI boom. Vietnam is classified as a Frontier Market by MSCI, which means global passive funds are structurally underweight; an Emerging Market reclassification, expected between 2025 and 2027, would trigger significant inflows and marks one of EM's clearest near-term catalyst plays.
